Trevor hopes to cover some of the challenges and successes of operating a retail farm operation during Covid-19. From supply challengers to labour to subsidies to customer and public health challenges. Hopefully this will provide you with a whirlwind snapshot of what our family has had to face this season, the need to pull together, laugh, let things go, hopefully come out on top, and realize “we’re in a pandemic dammit!”
Here’s Trevor’s bio: I grew up in the Kitchener Waterloo area, getting fresh produce from the Herrle’s garage was always a treat. Little did I know that the young girl I would be giving my money to would someday be my wife. (now she still takes my money)
Joanne and I have been married for 23 years and have two daughters 19 and 16. I have been farming with the Herrle Family for 22 years now, prior to that I was a Funeral Director, so I guess you could say I went from planting people to planting peas.
Yes, I am the in-law. Together with my wife Joanne we farm with her brother James and his wife Michelle and Joanne’s oldest sister Karen. Jame’s wife Michelle and I always say, “if you want a family business to succeed, hire an in-law”. We are the 2nd generation to take over the family business that started in 1967 by Joanne’s parents Howard and Elsie Herrle. We still farm the family land that has been in the Herrle family for over 160 years.
All together we own 600 acres and about 250 acres are in vegetables and strawberries which we mainly sell through our retail location www.herrles.com We employ about 80 seasonal staff. We work very well as a family, all specializing in different aspects of the business, and bringing our gifts and talents to our staff, our customers, and our community.
I manage the smaller crops totalling about 70 acres and the daily procurement of fruits and vegetables for the market. We try to have no more than a 2 day supply on hand as to ensure freshness throughout the season. It’s a delicate balance that our customers and community appreciate and have come to expect from us.
I also manage our Social Media Twitter @HerrlesMarket and Instagram @Herrles_Market informing our customers not only what’s current but what happens off the farm as well and interacting with the community in our off season.
